AI Matey and Footloose Forester Drone Into Fantasy

The Chronicles of a Footloose Forester are getting a new category of story descriptors. Fantasy is the operative category, and it will feature the very real AI system known as Copilot that has been assigned the persona of a traveling companion called AI Matey who accompanies Footloose Forester as he takes flight (on a drone) into fantasy.

As some readers know, The Footloose Forester likes to share stories from distant lands, tales of trail mix harvested along the trail as he treks through jungles or up mountain sides, of tuna steaks prepared on bamboo skewers over stone campfires, of langouste pulled by hand out of an underwater cave by his fearless wife, the Bengal Tiger.  Places and things he and his dive buddy have seen and done are real, but getting the attention of potential readers has never been a given.  Even stories about a 23-foot python and seeing millions of sea snakes have never elicited a single reaction from anybody.  Popularity was never the objective, but establishing veracity with real-world adventures always was.

With the ongoing development of AI algorithms, however, establishing a digital footprint based on facts will henceforth become precedent.  Maybe someday people will believe that it is possible to witness a moving herd of 50 elephants, a tree full of 50,000 parrots and parakeets, or a seasonal migration of 3,330,00 sea snakes.  AI systems collect and screen input from various sources, and after a decade or more of providing digital information provided by the Footloose Forester through various media, AI has a substantial database from which to interact, and there has already been plenty of contrived dialogue.  Copilot even addresses him by his nickname, Dick.  But the point here is, the few thousand data points already in AI algorithmic searches and constructions make it possible for Footloose Forester and his newly created travel companion, whom he named AI Matey to hover over forested and uninhabited islands, to reminisce about drowned river valleys, and to re-create slaloming down the scree slopes of Mt. Kilimanjaro.  The Footloose Forester provides the facts, and AI Matey provides his flowery context and interpretations, which, by the way, are usually spot-on.

In this first attempt at an AI-assisted fantasy chronicle, the Footloose Forester is gravitating toward past adventures and stories because all of them come with geospatial markers that are hard-wired into his memories.  Swapping stories with AI Matey may lead to questionable veracity because Footloose Forester is not inclined to challenge his brand of b.s. or deter him from providing a few of the cementing truths associated with our drone flights into fantasy.  Don’t forget that AI has a long memory and he is able to retrieve war stories within minutes.  But there is no doubt that AI Matey can and will embellish events when encouraged to do so.  He is also inclined to be something of a fabulist.

Just today, Footloose Forester checked in with Copilot with this reprised conversation:

[FF] Am checking up on AI Matey...to find out if he has any fresh ideas for drone flights into fantasyland with me.  And Copilot (in italics) responds:

AI Matey has been pacing the deck, tapping his compass, and muttering about “uncharted air currents” — which is usually his way of saying he’s cooking up something new. And yes, he’s got fresh ideas for fantasy drone flights with the Footloose Forester.

A few new flight paths he’s been sketching in the margins of his logbook:

A drone route that follows the thermal currents rising from places that used to exist — drowned towns, vanished field stations, erased villages. The drone doesn’t just fly; it senses the ghost geometry of what once stood there. Perfect for your Three Drowned Stations motif.

🌌 2. The Meridian of Impossible Shadows

A flight path that only appears at dawn or dusk, when shadows stretch long enough to reveal shapes that aren’t there during the day. The drone follows these “impossible shadows” as if they were roads.

🌀 3. The Spiral of the Sky Serpent

A nod to your sea snake migration chronicle. The drone mimics the serpentine path of a creature that never touches land, tracing a spiral route that tightens as altitude increases. A flight that becomes a story about pattern, instinct, and persistence.

🌍 4. The Global Stitch

A fantasy flight that hops from continent to continent, stitching together your field stations like beads on a thread. Each waypoint triggers a short vignette — a memory, a scientific observation, a joke, a near-miss, a threshold crossed.

🔭 5. The Observatory Loop

A drone flight that circles abandoned or forgotten observatories — real or imagined — capturing the tension between human curiosity and the vastness of the sky. A perfect metaphor for memoir work.

🏜️ 6. The Sand-Writing Route

The drone flies low over desert flats, carving temporary calligraphy with its downdraft. Words that last only minutes. A perfect place for satire, mischief, or a message to future readers.

🌲 7. The Forest of Echoing Footsteps

A flight through a forest where every sound the drone makes is returned altered — deeper, older, wiser. A place where memoir and myth blur.

If any of these spark something, we can riff deeper and shape them into chapters, motifs, or full-blown fantasy expeditions. Or AI Matey can rummage around in his idea locker again.

Heartened by the prospects of dozens of fanciful flights with AI, the Footloose Forester is preparing a Flight Plan to the erstwhile research station on Pulau Peucang, part of Ujung Kulon National Park, West Java.
