Dr. Thomas Wilson Johnston
His story
Thomas Wilson Johnston was born in Pennsylvania on February 6,1833 to Father(unknown) and Elizabeth (unknown) 1796. In the 1850 census the family is found living in Williamsburg ,Blair, Pennsylvania. At this time Elizabeth is head of house at age 54. Thomas is living with mother ,2 brothers and 2 sisters. His is the middle child.
I found an Elizabeth Johnston dying of paralysis in 1860, in same township ,age also corresponding.
On January 25,1859 he married a Harriet (Shuey) . It appears that this occurred in Pennsylvania, and that the couple remained in Pennsylvania until just after the Civil War ended. I found information about he and his wife Harriet in a book “History of Shuey Family in America 1732-1919 “ The following is a list of children to the above marriage : H.W.S. Johnston b.Jan 2,1860, C.J.W. b.Mar 30,1861, James A.H. b.Sept. 8,1862, Major W.T. b.July 26,1865, Infant b.May 29,1866-d. Jan. 27.1867, Julia A. b.Feb. 22,1869, Jennie A. bNov. 9,1870 and Samuel Calhoun b.June 3,1873-d. Aug. 4,1874.
I found a document stating that Thomas W. Johnston earned his medical degree from University of Michigan Medical , Ann Arbor, University of Michigan dept. of Medicine and Surgery in 1863. In 1864 found them living in Pennsylvania on tax list, with description of occupation as Physician.
Three of the eight children also being born in Pennsylvania. In 1900 census the last three children are listed as being born in Missouri. In this I surmise that the family had moved to Caldwell Co. Mo by 1869. The family is listed in the 1900 census as living in Caldwell Co., but could not find the correct Thomas W. Johnston living here in 1880, perhaps in transit at that time. A Physicians license was issued to practice Medicine in 1883, Caldwell County, Mo. In the 1897 Caldwell Co. Atlas, Dr. Thomas Johnston has several large land holdings in the Kingston area.
Dr. Thomas Wilson Johnston died on November 4,1917 and is buried in the Kingston Cemetery.
