At the stroke of midnight my husband held me in his arms and expressed his love for me. We had been reflecting all day on the wonder of this millennium year with the help of ABC News coverage of world-wide celebrations. He let a few minutes elapse then handed me a small beautifully wrapped gift. (I knew it had to be expensive as Tom could not have produced such an exquisitely wrapped package!) The gift was a gold necklace with a large heart embedded with multiple rubies and accented with small diamonds. There were also earrings each with a ruby and one diamond above it.
Tom said that it was meant to express his feelings about our love and commitment to each other. He said it had been too long since he had given me a gift of fine jewelry and wanted to make this night very special. Such love and devotion from my tender hearted husband overwhelmed me. He put a lot of thought into this gift. It wasn’t the expense but what it represented that he wanted to convey—that our love was worth it and was as beautiful as the gems and gold he had selected.
Tom also said he felt bad that he couldn’t seal the moment with a kiss! He had been coming down with a cold and had felt miserable all day. We never kissed when either of us had anything contagious!
That night I looked up Proverbs 31 concentrating on verses 10-12, “Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies. The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need for spoil. She will do him good and not evil all the days of her life.” I prayed that my Heavenly Father would help me be that kind of wife—worthy of Tom’s love.
{The above story was found in my journal. Turning my thoughts now to this 1st day of January 2015 that tender moment still lingers in the recesses of my mind and heart. It has been almost nine years since Tom’s death, but the memories of such sweet spirit experiences will forever linger.} Margaret d'AquinTom’s Gift of LOVE on the Advent of the Millennial Year 2000
