Toys
I don’t remember any toys I had when I was very small. There are pictures of me holding a poor stuffed giraffe by the neck.
Karen and I usually got our toys at Christmas. I don’t remember either of us getting a toy as a birthday present or at any other time.
We always got a new doll for Christmas. I remember “Betsy Wetsy”-you “fed” it with a doll bottle of water and it “wet’ it’s diaper. When we were older, we received “fancy dolls” dressed in beautiful long dresses. One Christmas we both got bride dolls. .
Other toys I remember:
A dollhouse-two story, made of painted metal, and open in the back for play. It had small dolls and furniture in it.
Roller skates. These were the clamp on kind you wore over your shoes. The length was adjustable. We went to the street at the corner-Thomas Street- and all the neighborhood kids would be there on Christmas afternoon-riding bikes and skating,
Bicycle, of course! I had a blue one with a wire basket attached to the front. It was single speed with coaster brakes. I kept that bike until I went to college. I have no idea what became of it. During the summer in high school, I would ride my bike to the Willowbranch Library (about 2 miles) and come home with a basket full of books.
