Marjorie--the Florida years

  • Dad's uncle, Claire Kuhl had a home on a lake in South Miami. I recall visiting him and his wife Helen there a number of times. They had a paddle boat which my parents took me out on, and when I was older I believe we swam in the lake. My mother always called Claire 'Grampie Claire" since he looked so much like his brother, our Grampie--Glen Kuhl, who had died in 1953, before I was born.

  • Marjorie, Coral Gables 1961. The look on my face is one I'm very familiar with--my granddaughter, Nicole assumes exactly this expression when she feels tricked. It tickles me that this "look' has carried into anther generation! This was taken in my grandparent's back yard in Coral Gables, Florida. Probably at Easter--this is the kind of Easter dress I would have worn. If it was Easter, we were in the middle of our Easter egg hunt, staged out doors, of course, since the weather was so balmy and there were so many delightful places to tuck hard boiled, colored Easter eggs. We didn't hunt for eggs once, we gave each person a chance to hide them, and my siblings and I gamely searched repeatedly for the colored eggs, hidden in the middle of small palm trees, under bushes, tucked behind lawn furniture and more.

Pickens was at the other end of Santa Rosa Island from our grandmother's beachhouse, but when I was small the fort was derelict, but still open for people to visit and crawl around the old buildings of the fort. In this picture are my siblings, minus Beth, who was too young to take this trip, and Rob, who was not born yet.

  • A photo of Po'Lady's beachhouse, taken many years after she last lived there. The shore is now deeply eroded. But the water tower in the background was always a landmark we looked for when we were nearing the end of our journey and almost there. The upstairs porch was a sleeping porch, where cousins often pulled cots out onto the porch and feel asleep to the sound of the gentle waves of Santa Rosa Sound. It was an amazing place to spend the summer at. We were so very lucky to have this place in our lives.

  • 1962 Kuhl Family portrait In this photo, back row, l-R Em Turner Nickinson Kuhl, Don Kuhl, holding Beth Kuhl (now Nelson) Front row, L-R Phillips Kuhl, me, Marjorie and Mary Glen Kuhl Chitty.Mom and Mary Glen are wearing Halloween costumes that Mom sewed. I had a similar costume, but in this photo I had evidently already changed into shorts and top, also sewn by my mother. By the lushness of the background I would say this had to have been taken in Coral Gables at our Grandmother's Grannie Kuhl's (Marjorie Mae Davenport Kuhl) house.

  • 4852 NW 2nd court, Plantation, FL back yard 1965. That's me, Marjorie, on our then new back porch, newly built, since there was no screened porch covering the patio slab. We moved to Plantation in 1960 to a 4-bedroom house, where my parent's 4th child Beth was born that fall (Oct. 1960.) After our youngest brother Rob was born in 1963 the house felt even smaller, so my parents decided to enclose the carport to create an additional 5th bedroom and play area (and 3rd bathroom). When I was growing up the yard was quite sandy, with very few plantings. It was after the kids left home that my parents turned this barebones yard into a tropical arboretum, which featured at least 150 different tropical species of plants and citrus trees.

  • Ft. Lauderdale Beach, 1989. I went down to Ft. Lauderdale to visit my parents infrequently when my children were young, but this picture was from one of those trips.

  • Em Chitty, Marjorie 1990. In this photo my cousin Em got out her guitar and sang with me. We were spending Christmas at my brother Rob's house, when he and his wife hester, with their young son Nate, lived in Chatham, MA. This was when I had only recently started performing as a storyteller/singer. It gave me great joy to be able to sing and play with Em!

  • April 1993 Marjorie w Megan, Anna. One of the few photos of me as an adult wearing short hair. This was just prior to my serious brain surgery, so I had cut my hair. The child in my arms in my brother Rob's first daughter, Megan, who was born early (we're birthday buddies!). Rob and Hester brought Megan up from the Cape where they were then living to see me before the surgery. It wasn't certain that I would survive, and Megan was a child I didn't think I'd live to see. This photo reminds me of the precious blessing it was to hold this child, new life. My own daughter Anna, on the left, was excited to see the new baby. She has always had a very big place in her heart for little ones. I always feel a strong sense of poignancy when I look at this photo.

  • Caleb, Anna, Marjorie 1995 Beachnuts, Pensacola Beach, FL. Our extended family rented 3 beach houses on Pensacola beach for a reunion in 1995. We did not try to rent Po'Lady's house, since the beach there has been substantially washed away, requiring a seawall to shore up the sand there. We spent a week together swimming, boating, exploring, capturing hermit crabs, making sand castles and more. I believe there were 35 or so of us who attended, from the Kuhl, Chitty and Nickinson families. The matching t-shirts were created and worn by all the "Beachnuts' which was the name that stuck for the gathering, which has reconvened a number of times since 1995.
