- How to Archive Family Keepsakes by Denise May Levenick Hi again, Connie. This book was in my local Barnes & Noble so I just picked it up (in hard copy form...can't get into the digital book-reading...
I did the initial setup following the "START HERE" Tutorial. Once my home page was complete with selected template, I made a GEDCOM file from my desktop management software (I use Personal Ancestral File--PAF) including the individuals I wanted in my FamilyTree. Since I am the family genealogist for the Hermannus Thiessens Family Associatioin (HTFA), I included all of my research results for my direct ancestral families for that organization as well as all descendants of Hermannus Thiessens, my grandfather.
I also wanted to be able to have my own full pedigree lines in addition to those in the HTFA ancestry and descendants, I also included those in my GEDCOM (Genealogical Data COMmunication developed by FamilySearch). Any of the software management systems with GEDCOM capability use similar instructions. I saved my file on my desktop and gave it the same name as the Family Tree.
From here, I went to my Family Tree website administration and followed the directions under the GEDCOM tab. Caution!: Be sure to give it enough time to upload the GEDCOM and process it in the Family Tree site. A Green checkmark and Green Box will appear in the center of the screen when it has completed, and the number of individuals, marriages, etc. will be displayed. My GEDCOM included almost 3000 individuals including their marriages and the family connections. The notes, sources, and all data was imported seamlessly.
I had done this previously, but not all of the data were shown. Somehow, the GEDCOM didn't finish and none of the marriages and generation connections were there. I simply re-imported my GEDCOM and had it "replace all information" to remedy this. In the future, I could add an additional GEDCOM and the information would be updated to the Family Tree by selecting the appropriate setting. I could also enter information in directly. I don't do this, because I keep all of my data on PAF and only import the information I want to share publicly. I chose to list abbreviations of first names for all living individuals, and if I wanted to have members of my family/organization see the complete names and information, I could give them the rights to do so.
SET YOUR PRIVACY:
To reach your privacy page, go to Administration>Setup>General Settings>Privacy. NOTE: We highly recommend setting all living persons (birthdate less than 105 years from today if a date of death is not showing) in your genealogy to not show publicly. This can be done globally (preferred) or on each individual's profile.
Your Family Tree is now ready to be set up and populate with either GEDCOM or manual data entry. Any questions that you have can be added to this discussion, and I will be happy to investigate and answer them as best as I can.
