A Memory Triggered by a Song

Since my father was a professional musician, music is an integral part of my life.  However, one song that triggers a memory is "Volare".  I don't hear it that often anymore but just two weeks ago, my husband and I went to see the new Woody Allen, "From Rome with Love".  Lo and behold the opening credits come on to the meoldious strains of "Volare" by Dominico Modugno.  Immediately, a big smail washed over my face and I was immediately transported back to the summer of 1960 when I went on an extensive European holiday with my parents.  It had been a huge hit in 1958 and for Italy, "Volare" was still a big hit that summer and everywhere we went in Italy, you would hear that song.  Young men on motor scooters would ride up to sidewalk cafes, get off their "bikes" and with a guitar that had been slung over their shoulder, begin to entertain the American tourists with their version of "Volare".  Of course, they would also make ceratin to pass the hat after they had sung.  Suddenly, "Arrivaderci Roma" took a back seat to "Volare".  It is still a favorite of mine!
