Bald Mountain
Many summers while I was growing up, we took a summer vacation to the Adirondack mountains in New York to visit my grandparents (Grandpa and Grandma Reed). One of my favorite places to visit was Bald Mountain. It was always a great outing. The first part of the trail was mostly through the woods. As you got closer to the top it was rockier. Once you got to the top there was a beautiful view. You could climb up in the ranger lookout tower and see for miles. There was also Balanced Rock. As the name suggests, it is a large boulder on the edge of the mountain.
One of the 'fun' things we liked to do was to climb up on Balanced Rock for a picture. This is me and my four sisters (from the left), Rebecca, Patty, Anne and Sally.
Years later we took our kids up Bald Mountain. The ones that were brave enough climbed up on the rock (my sister Anne, her son Jason, my daughter Shelby and my sister Patty's son Daniel). Grandpa (my dad), my kids Natalie and Nick, and Patty's daughter Wendy all decided standing in front of it was just fine. (Their mom did not want any of them climbing up on the rock.)
There have been many generations of Reeds that have sat on Balanced Rock. I recently found this picture of my grandfather, Frank Reed, and my uncle Elwyn and uncle Ralph.

Beautiful view Rick. Which one of the kids is you and who are the others? I love the Adirondacks!!
I remember our trip to Bald Mountain. I really loved climbing the rocky part - like a puzzle figuring out just where to step. I don't remember being afraid to sit on balanced rock, but I figure I was just wise beyond my years ;-) And I totally believe Mom not wanting us to get up on there. It does seem as if one wrong move would knock it over, even though it has been probably been sitting at that spot for ages.
I have heard of the Reed outings to "Balanced Rock" many times. Hope to make the trip up there one day to see for myself!!
