Cops and Robbers

The evening sun had hidden its face behind the mountains, casting a beautiful sunset across the sky.  Darkness was appearing fast, and another day had almost passed.

Our daily farm chores had been completed for this day.  I had just finished mine and was making my way to the house.  As I walked slowly along gazing at the sky, my thoughts were on the warm food and warm fire awaiting me at the house.

My attention was attracted by a strange noise on the road which was not very far from the house.  I ran to the house as fast as I could and locked the door behind me.

From a window I looked to see what had caused the noise.  Just then two men swiftly turned the corner and ran to a clump of tall dry weeds by the barn.  With tools and other farm supplies in their arms, they had barely made their way to the weeds when a car with a red blinker on top pulled to a sudden stop in front of our house.  I know that a car of this sort meant cops and trouble for someone.  Four men jumped from the car almost at the same time and headed for the patch of weeds.  They began to make a survey of this particular spot when a low rustling sound attracted my attention.

The two men rushed through the weeds and crossed the road to the garden while the cops with flashlights were searching the patch of weeds.

The robbers huddled close to a shock of corn, causing them to resemble two hunted animals.

My divided interest caused me to shift my glance from one scene to the other.  My eyes finally rested on the shock of corn which the robbers were standing by.

Suddenly a flood of light filled the room from which I was watching.  Cops seemed to be everywhere, and to my surprise, I found that this whole exciting mess had only been a dream of “Cops and Robbers.”
