'The Man In The Dusty Worn Sandals"

In 1994 my wife, Diane, was called as the Relief Society President in our LDS ward.  In preparation for her first Relief Society Visiting Conference (for female members of the church who have been called to visit the homes of the sisters in the ward each month), she was at a loss as to what the theme should be and what she should present.  After consulting with her counselors, and then thought, pondering, and prayer, the thoughts and words of this poem literally flowed from her mind and pen.

This poem was presented to the sisters at that conference in August, 1994.

The Man In The Dusty Worm Sandals

(C) Diane Adams, 8/94

A blind man sees as he walks away

A man in the dusty worn sandals.

The lame can walk and the lepers are healed

By the man in the dusty worn sandals.

A woman crawls to touch his robe,

By faith she will be healed.

The children come and sit on his lap

And feel his love surround them.

Some praise his name, others ask who he is;

The man in the dusty worn sandals.

As the night draws near and fatigue comes his way.

The people cry "Master please stay."

With love and compassion he meets their needs;

The man in the dusty worn sandals.

"Please remove this cup if it be Thy will"

Was his plea to Father Above.

But with pain and sorrow he bore the sins

of a world he created and loved.

In humble silence before Pilot he stood;

Mocked and scorned, falsely judged and condemned.

Through his hands and his feet the nails there pierced

On the man in the dusty worn sandals.

They hailed him king, the carpenter's son.

Generations would honor his name.

A perfect man we will some day meet;

The man in the dusty worn sandals.

We bear his name as we work his plan.

We promise to love, serve and obey;

For he is our Savior, God and King,

The man in the dusty worn sandals.
