Boys Don't Usually Ask, She Said

I jumped the gun and wrote about my first "love," and to this day I do believe it WAS love and I've written about Mary Sue, my 4th grade "first date."  Between Mary Sue and Lois, my first love, I dated VERY seldom.  However there was Sue M.  She was a twirler in the band and -as twirlers tend to be- she had a nice figure and was fairly bubbly and cute.  I got up nerve enough to ask for a date and was surprised when she said, "Yes."  We went to the movie theater; about the only recreation in our little town and afterwards just cruised around town for a while.  When it came time to take her home I walked her to her front door where we chatted for a minute.  Now remember, this was in the 1940's.  While we were talking I was trying to decide whether or not to try for a "goodnight kiss."  Finally, thinking it was the "gentlemanly thing to do" I said, "Can I kiss you goodnight?"  She answered, "Boys don't usually ask girls that."  I was so embarrassed that my face must have lit up her front porch.   Her only response after saying that was to move in closer to me and initiate a nice kiss.  I walked away knowing that never again would I ask that question.  It was the only date I ever had with Sue.  I could hardly look at her after that without feeling like a dumb-ass.

Pure innocence.

Pure innocence.

Ah, what a kind way to put it. But I honestly DID think that was the "gentlemanly" thing to do. I was REAL "Southern" "Old School." Women were put on Earth for men to respect, protect, and admire for their beauty. I've never completely lost that part of my Southern heritage.

I Love It! What an education. However, you got not only a straight forward verbal answer, but you also got that 'goodnight kiss'. It's interesting the life's lessons we learn in the innocence of youth. Sort of like telling a 'white lie' to try to keep out of trouble. It can really suck us into trouble, instead.

Boy do I know how those "white lies" can suck a person in. I think the belief that there ARE such things as "harmless" white lies is, in itself, a white lie. Doesn't mean a person has to be tactless in telling the truth but only the truth can "set you free."
