My First Own Car
When I got back from Viet Nam I had enough money saved up to buy me a car . My father and I went to the Chevy dealer and looked at some late model used cars . This was the fall of 1968 and I found a beautiful 1962 Pontiac Tempest convertible . Fire Engine Red with a white top . red interior . It was ALL mine . It was a 300 mile trip to Ft Hood and by the time I finished my two weeks leave and drove to Ft Hood I had put just about 900 miles on it out of the 1000 mile warranty . The transmission went out in it . You see it was the year that they decided to try and make the floor board flat in front . They put the motor then the drive shaft then the transmission then the rear end making the transmission just in front of the rear end . I’m not a mechanic but for some reason that didn’t work . They couldn’t keep transmission’s in them . They ended up giving me another beautiful car . It was a 1964 Ford Fairlane 2 door hardtop . Red with a white top . I loved that car . Too bad I tortered it to death . It had wide oval’s on it and baby moons . wide Ovals are tires that is like the ones they have today with raised letters on them and Baby Moons are small hub caps that are just plain smooth . like a small bowl except a beautiful shiny chrome . That was my first real car and I really did love that one .

Oh yeah, our FIRST cars are right up there with our "first loves." And almost to a man we beat them to death. I sure did. The dealer seemed to treat you pretty well. Keep the stories coming.
I hope they gave you some credit for taking a car 4 years older. You still got the better deal.
