Chapter 6 - Trusting in the Lord

“Whoso putteth his trust in the Lord shall be safe.” (Proverbs 29:25).

A few years after I was married, I was walking down the street with one of my friends. We were in casual conversation about the gospel, and somewhere in the conversation I happen to ask the question that I am sure a lot of people ask: "Why do all the miracles happen to the other  guy and not me?" when I asked that question, she made a statement that would impact me for many years to come. she said "if you want a miracle, create one."

At first I thought that statement was rather bold and arrogant but then I learned what she was really saying. Most, if not all, miracles are witnessed or recognized after we seek, ponder, and pray. All sincere prayers are answered. Once a prayer is uttered, watch and be mindful of our Heavenly Father's hand in all aspects of our lives. We will witness miracles every day that were once missed because we were not listening and watching.

One of my favorite scriptures is found in Proverbs 3:5-6 where it states "Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths."

This next experience was one that would teach me how to trust in my Father in Heaven. It would also instill in me just how much my Heavenly Father is involved in my life, and that he really does know each one of us individually.

One day it was one of those busy mornings trying to get the children and husband up and ready for school and work. Golden had left for work and my oldest daughter, Chantel, had left for school. I was working with the other children to get them ready for school. Chantel phoned from school and asked me to bring her a report that she had forgotten. Grades meant everything to her so I tried to help her out. All I had that was for travel was the moped. I figured that if I could get there in ten minutes, find her quickly, and get back in ten minutes, I could pull it off.

Everything was going great and on schedule until I attempted to get home. I could not start the moped. No matter what I did it would not start. I was becoming nervous because I knew that I had to get home to the other children and did not have much time. I said a silent prayer and asked Heavenly Father to help me start the moped as I needed to get home. It still would not start.

A thought came into my mind that said I was not worthy to have a prayer answered immediately. I had never asked for one that I needed so quickly, so I figured it wasn't going to happen. I began to walk home pushing the moped. As I was walking, another thought came to me saying “I was worthy, just have faith.” I did not understand faith very well, but I silently prayed again and asked my Heavenly Father if He would help me get home in any way He saw fit.

I continued walking and when I reached the corner, to my surprise, my brother-in-law Gene Molyneux happened to drive by on his way to work. He was running late, but he stopped to see if I needed any help. I explained my situation so he put the moped in the truck and drove me home.

It seems to me that in every miracle, there is something greater to learn than experiencing the miracle itself. This was a wonderful opportunity for me to learn how I could rely on the Lord and he would always be there. When I have faced challenges since that experience, great or small, I have received strength from knowing and experiencing His hand in my life.

There are many times in parenting when life gets pretty frustrating. This next experience surprised both me and my son Aaron. He was probably somewhere between ten and twelve years old when a very powerful lesson of prayer was about to come our way.

It was football season, and BYU was playing the game of the year against Air Force. Aaron wanted to go very badly, but it was sold out. After much pleading I finally turned to him and said, "Aaron it will take a miracle for you to go to that game." We decided to have a prayer and ask for help in getting some tickets.

Sad to say, but in the back of my mind I really did not think that anything would happen because it was just football tickets. As small an issue as this was, the Lord provided a great opportunity for us to experience the power of prayer.

Within a very short time from our prayer, the phone rang. It was a girl who inadvertently had been given our number for someone else. We confirmed the number she had and told her that no one lived here with that name. Just before she hung up she asked if there was anyone there that wanted football tickets to the BYU/Air Force football game.

I was stunned and Aaron was excited. Not only did he get a ticket to the game but he was given four tickets. Both mine and Aaron's testimony of prayer were strengthened that day.
