This month we would like to spotlight Harold and Gloria Cox.  Harold was born Feb. 26, 1935 in Ferron, Emery County, Utah and Gloria was born July 4, 1938 in Manti, Utah.  Her birth certificate says July 5th because the doctor didn't get it signed until then.  They have lived in Salem since 1968. 

 

Harold first noticed Gloria when he was a senior in high school in Castle Dale. Gloria had moved there, but she wasn't even aware of Harold.  She moved to Springville during her senior year in high school.  Harold was attending BYU Academy and asked some friends from Springville if they knew her.  They did and he made contact with her, and they were married on August 18, 1956.

 

Harold had attended Carbon College in Price from 1953-1955 and transferred to BYU Academy.  One of his professors was Garth Hill from Salem.  He went out in Education and was doing his student teaching when he realized he really didn't like teaching.  He changed professons.  He worked for Sears until 1960.  Then he went to work for Jennings Fish and got his contractor's license.  He has built several homes.  He went to work for the LDS Church PM Group in 1984 and retired in 1995.

 

Gloria has worked for Mt. View Hospital in the cafeteria, at BYU as a matron, for home health and then took care of an elderly woman for ten years.  All of this, while raising three boys and two girls.  They have 18 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.

 

Both Harold and Gloria have had some health problems these last several years and are doing better now.  They like to go to Arizona during the winter.  They enjoy 4-wheeling with friends in Utah.

 

Harold has been involved with service work for Salem City.  He built offices in both the old and new Salem City shops.  He framed the new shop.  He did curb work at the City Office.  His own shop and tools have been used for many projects for Salem City (thanks to his son, Steve, who works for Salem City).  He has built some handicap ramps for citizens in Salem and a Salem City employee who was injured.

 

Harold's hobby is his farm in Mt. Pleasant; his cows and horses.  Gloria does beautiful crochet work, and is quite an artist which shows in her tole painting.  She cuts out her own projects (sometimes using Harold's good oak and hardwood that she finds in his shop).  They have been active members of the LDS Church, serving two missions--one at the Family History Center and one at the Springville Bishop's Storehouse as well as Temple Workers.

 

Harold jokingly tells his kids "he wished he'd raised chickens instead of kids."  They love their grandkids.  They both love the mountains around Salem, their ward, the peaceful area, the fresh air and the people are top class people that would help anyone.
