Lew and Evelyn Christensen
Lew and Evelyn Christensen were both born and raised in Salem. They raised 5 boys all who still live close by. They have 20 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. While Lew was growing up in Salem, he knew everyone's name and if they had a dog, he knew its name also. Lew spent 2 years in the Arny. His most memorable experience was while he was serving in Nevada, he and Don Cole were "invited" to be among the closest to ever witness an Atomic Bomb blast.
After the Army, he worked odd jobs and, while working contruction, he bought a diesel truck and eventually increased that to a fleet of 7 trucks that they used to ship, among other things, coke used in making steel from as far away as China.
Evelyn graduated from Spanish Fork High School and Snow College. She worked as a telephone operator back when all calls went through the operators. She also worked for Cable TV when it first came to Salem. Aside from being a wife and mother, she was secretary to Lew's business. She has been a long time member of the Golden Girls Dancers.
The Christensens have been Family of the Year and Grand Marshals of the Salem Days parade. Lew also served as the City's Justice of the Peace. They love to go to heavy equipment and antique auctions.
For a kid who never graduated from high school, Lew has proven that if you have goals, work hard and have the right woman to work beside you, good things will happen to you. There are a lot more good stories, just sit down and talk to Lew for a while.
By the way, thank you Lew & Evelyn for the walking/jogging track. It is such an asset to our community.
