Their Story
Henry Clay Dayhoff was born to parents Joshua Owen Dayhoff and Catherine Beale( Poole) Dayhoff in 1844 in Boonsboro, Washington Co. Maryland. In the census of 1850 he was living with his parents and siblings ; Joshua T-14,Emily-8, Sarah E. -2 and Emily Poole, -Aunt.
In the 1868 he had apparently moved to Caldwell County, Missouri and was joined in marriage to Catherine Spivey (1847-1872) Or perhaps he was just traveling through preaching at various churches. In the census of 1870, the couple Henry-26, and Catherine-21 were living in Chetopa, Neosho Co. Kansas, and Henry’s mother Catherine was living with them. No children born into family yet when this census taken. The oldest child William Henry Dayhoff was born in 1870, month not known. The second child was Charles Spivey Dayhoff, born in 1872 , which was just before the time of his mothers death.
On November 4,1872 Henry Clay Dayhoff’s wife Catherine died in Chautauqua, Kansas and is buried at Cedar Vale Cemetery.
In 1873, August 14th, Henry Clay Dayhoff married Martha Ann Kendall (1846-1933) . They were married by J.W. Bovee, pastor o the M.E. Church.
In the census of 1880 Henry and 2nd wife Martha were living in Moberly , Missouri. At this time they had 4 children William H. -9, Charles Spivey-7, Gracy-4 and Nellie-9months. Also living within household was Henry’s mother Catherine -75.
In the census of 1900 Henry and Martha were still living in Moberly ,Missouri. At this time his mother Catherine was apparently deceased. The children Grace-23,Nellie-20, Clarence-19, John-16, and May 11 were all listed in household.
In the census of 1910 Henry and Martha were living in Woodbury, Iowa, along with Grace-33, Nellie-30, Clarence-29, John26, May-21, and Bertha 3.
The Dayhoff family had apparently moved to Montana between the 1910 census and the 1920 census. Henry Clay Dayhoff, died on July 1,1915, and is buried at Custer City Cemetery, Miles City, Montana.
Mrs.H.C.( Martha Kendall) Dayhoff was born in 1847 to parents John and Elizabeth (Celtise)Kendall, in Davidson Co. North Carolina.. In the census of 1870 the Kendall family are living in Kingston, Missouri with children, Martha-23, Charles-21, Addison-16, and Margaret-9.
It is noted that this is the family which most probably donated the land for the Kendall Chapel to be built upon. Hence the “Kendall Chapel Memorial Quilt”.
In the census of 1920, Martha Dayhoff was living with son John, and daughter Grace, in School District #1, Rosebud, Montana. Probably, one of the three was a teacher on the Rosebud Reservation, which is located there. Bertha Booth listed Mrs. H.C. Dayhoff as a subscription teacher at the Kingston School for 1 year, no date known.
In the census of 1930 Martha was still living with son John-46 (single) and daughter Grace-53 (single) and Ruth Dayhoff, -18, who is listed as niece to John.

W.H. Dayhoff (William Henry) was born to Henry and Catherine (Spivey) Dayhoff in 1870. She was first wife to Henry Clay Dayhoff, she died in Cedar Vale, Chautauqua, Kansas . I couldn’t find location of burial but assume it is in that state and county.. William Henry married Carrie Hagen (1873-1944) She was born in Wisconsin and died in Lake Los Angeles, California. William Henry Dayhoff, died in 1922, in California. Both were transported to Custer City Cemetery, Miles City, Montana to be buried.
