SALEM PICT-ORAL HISTORY PROJECT: INSTRUCTIONS

The Salem Pict-Oral History Project is designed to preserve the living legacy of the community of Salem, Utah.  It is a prototype and the first community project of its kind utilizing the official archive of the Living Legacy Project, LegacyStories.org.  The Salem City Library has long had a desire to have an oral history project to save the heritage of Salem Utah.  Citizens who are long-time residents, previous residents, or new-comers are invited to participate.  This preserves the life lessons, values and traditions of our families and the community.

One of Salem's long-time residents, Nedra T. Hanks, has graciously provided the photos and oral narratives as an example of the pattern or template we would like the project to include.  You can view and listen to her contribution to the Pict-Oral History of Salem.  CLICK HERE.

To participate, locate five vintage photos that represent you and ties to Salem.  We suggest: 1. Ancestor, 2. Childhood memory, 3. Marriage, 4. Family, and 5. A special memory of your choosing.  Then you will record your voice describing the people, places and events in the photos.

The project involves the following steps:

1.  View and listen to the example Pict-Oral History above.

2.  From the example given above, register for your own LegacyStories.org FREE Legacy Portfolio account,  CLICK HERE. Give your name, email address, zip code, and password.  This will automatically friend the library to your profile and you to the library.

3.  Complete your profile by uploading a photo, writing a welcome message, and completing the "About Me" basic information and contact information. Add "LegacyStories.org" to your address book so you won't miss any notifications.

4.  There are two different ways by which your Pict-Oral history can be saved on the LegacyStories.org site.

  • (a) The first involves uploading the digitized photos to the slideshow album in LegacyStories and recording the oral narrative directly to each photo using a microphone attached to a computer (My Slideshows).
  • (b) The second involves recording the oral narrative using the Free Legacy Stories App (Apple or Android).

The first makes a slideshow, while the second option requires that you move from audio to audio to see the  photos and listen to the oral narrative in the Pict-Oral.

5.  Download the photos and the audios to separate files on your desktop and put them in a file with your name.  Then burn a CD of the files as a personal backup and a second CD to give to the library for a Pict-Oral History Backup of your raw files.

6.  Using the sharing option, send a link of the photo/oral narratives to family members and friends to share and collaborate.

7. Navigate through the site by clicking on the Salem Utah Heritage thumbnail in your friends section.  This takes you to the Salem Utah Heritage profile.  The friends section will contain the thumbnails of all friends of the library so that you can view their contributions, ask them to be your friends (upon approval) and comment on each other's Pict-Oral History.

There are three different options to produce your Pict-Oral History--Do It Yourself, Do it With Help (the library will offer classes), or Have It Done For You [for under $100, Golden Adams Accredited Genealogist(AG), Certified Legacy Advisor(CLA)- Adams Genealogical and Legacy Services 801-762-7460], so that your legacy is preserved in perpetuity as part of community history.  The main thing is to participate.  Without you there would be no Salem Pict-Oral History!

In the 1800s and early 1900s, citizens paid to have their biological and historical information and photo published in a "Mug Book". Now this can be done using state-of-the-art LegacyStories technology. Photos and Oral narratives can now be preserved and shared with posterity and researchers. How would you like to be remembered? Those who are now older than 12 years old lived in the 20th century and the Living Legacy Project has a mission to preserve the living history of the 20th century. Time is of the essence. Procrastination can lead to regret. Take this simple opportunity to reserve your place in history--for we never know what tomorrow will bring! And enjoy Salem Heritage, especially the Pict-Oral slides and audio narratives.
